History

The land on which St Vincent’s Care Services Bronte is located was the home of the Cadi-gal people, who witnessed the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove.

Bronte was developed much later than other parts of the Waverley district, with only 11 houses in the immediate vicinity of the beach in 1909. In was not until the 1920s that houses were built in large numbers on the cliffs and ridges overlooking the beach. Since the 1970s, the suburb has surged, with developers taking advantage of the beauty of the coastal suburb, seeing residential prices soaring into the millions over the past 20 years. Excellent public transport links, prestigious schools, sporting facilities, the village atmosphere and the proximity to central Sydney continue to be major drawcards for the suburb.

A significant historical landmark in the suburb is Bronte House. Construction commenced on the house in 1836 by New South Wales Colonial Architect, Mortimer Lewis, and was completed in 1845 by Robert Lowe, an Oxford graduate and barrister, just 12 months after he and his wife arrived in Australia from England.

The site on which St Vincent’s Care Services Bronte stands has a long history in providing accommodation and care for locals. In 1956 in collaboration with the Franciscan Order, Waverly Parish established Loreto House to give accommodation to 14 elderly ladies. Over time, this facility grew to include a nursing wing and to accommodate 96 residents. In 2003, the nursing home closed, and in 2011 the Parish approached St Vincent’s Care Services and commenced discussions about working together to continue the tradition of care of the elderly within the local Bronte community. St Vincent’s Care Services Bronte welcomed its first residents in October 2016.

Places of Worship

The on-site Loreto Chapel provides a space for quiet reflection and meditation, as well as regular Catholic mass and multi-denominational services. We enjoy a strong relationship with the Waverly Parish, who graciously conduct many of our on-site Catholic services.

Other nearby places of worship include Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, St Patrick’s Catholic Church, St Anthony’s Parish, St Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Holy Cross Catholic Church, All Saints’ Anglican Church and Randwick Uniting Church.
