Nearby Amenities

St Patrick's Villa is located in Gympie, 170km north of Brisbane. Gympie is a city of approximately 16,000 people located on the Mary River. The township has a range of amenities and services predominately located on the main street. Gold mining and agriculture are the dominant economic sectors whilst timber and tourism are also notable contributors. Gympie boasts a number of Museums, including the Gold Mining and Historical Museum. Gympie offers visitors and locals a wide array of cafes, bars and stunning 19th century Victorian architecture.

History

Originally settled for grazing purposes, Gympie became prominent when James Nash reported the discovery of ‘payable' alluvial gold on 16 October 1867. At the time Queensland was suffering from a severe economic depression and the discovery probably saved the colony from bankruptcy. A memorial fountain was built in honour of Nash's discovery. This event is still celebrated today during the Gympie Gold Rush Festival held over 10 days in October and includes a range of cultural events. As a result of the rapid development of the new settlement the streets were laid out in an irregular fashion, rather than the grid pattern common to most Queensland towns. A railway from Maryborough to Gympie was completed in 1881 and then 10 years later the North Coast Railway was built linking Gympie to Brisbane. A fire brigade commenced operations in 1900 and in 1903 Gympie was officially declared a town.
