History

The land on which St Vincent’s Care Services Maroochydore is situated is now known as the Sunshine Coast, and is the traditional home of the Kabi Kabi people. The Kabi Kabi people took their name from the pale honey gathered from the eucalyptus of the hinterland. The coastal strip and estuaries provided plentiful food sources, as did the ocean and the Bunya trees of the inland. The name Maroochydore is taken from the Kabi Kabi word marutji (red beak), the name given to the black swan. This name was told to pioneering builder and architect Andrew Petrie in 1842, who was exploring the area for timber harvesting.

The Maroochy district attracted early settlers in the 1840s with its fertile soil and plentiful timber. The discovery of gold at Gympie in the 1860s saw closer settlement as the first road was established from Brisbane to Gympie. Small farms growing sugar cane and tropical fruits sprang up along the road. The opening of the North Coast railway line in the 1890s brought increased marketing opportunities to transport horticultural produce.

Nambour became the administrative centre of the string of medium sized towns that grew along the railway line. The railway also provided holiday travel for working families, and soon the growing population was visiting emerging seaside villages, just a bumpy motor ride or cane train ride away.By the 1950s, the main economic activity had moved from Nambour to the beach towns, which in turn boomed to become the tourist area of the Sunshine Coast with Maroochydore taking pride of place.
